Shawn was on the ground for about five minutes. The trainer rushed over and helped him off the field while he was in pain.  About ten minutes later he was picked up by his parents and taken to the hospital. The doctors confirmed that he had two fractures in his back, and would be on the disabled list from two to six weeks.

One week later, he went in for another evaluation, and was told that he would only be out from two to three weeks.

“It’s rough that I am missing out on a couple games’ but it’s a chance for others to step up and be a big part of the team”, said—Shawn Lashbrook. He expects to be back before the season ends.

On that evening, during the Miami Dolphins Monday Night Football game against the New England Patriots, Shashaty was recognized by The Miami Dolphins Organization as the High School Player of the Week for his record-breaking performance against Highlands Christian Academy, where he threw for over 500 yards, 8 touchdowns and only 1 interception.

 “It was a really cool experience,” said Shashaty, who got to go down on the field at the end of the second quarter, and remained there the majority of the third quarter, right next to where all the NFL players were.

These are the kinds of nights, one might wonder, that could make a young athlete prideful, even boastful about their accomplishments, but not Shashaty.  In fact, for him it’s quite the opposite affect. He never hesitates to give all the glory to God, giving credit where credit is due.

“God has really blessed me with all these platforms—that’s what I like to call them—it just presents some really cool ways to show how God has used me that it’s not just me personally, or what I am working for, but it’s all about what He’s been doing in my life.”

This athlete’s humility and seemingly never-ending success makes him a great role model and has caused him to receive respect on and off the field. When news broke on our campus that he had been honored at the Monday Night Football game, one of America’s favorite night during the fall and winter season, Shashaty had a new list of fans yelling his name at the next CCA football home game. But the Dolphins game was forever in-printed in his mind.

“It’s every high school athlete’s dream,” he added, as recalled the night—seeing himself standing on NFL turf, surrounded by thousands of Dolphin and Patriot fans. Was he thinking of the future? Was he imagining himself playing on that field one day? Regardless of what was going through his mind, we know this: he carries the weight of the award heavily on his mind, but not the way most people might think.

“I think it’s a really awesome opportunity and with that comes a lot of responsibility, knowing that everything you do is under the spotlight, and I’ve found that out from both sides. It’s just a privilege for me to have that kind of an influence on the student body and it’s something that I do not take very lightly.”

As colleges around the country comb South Florida high schools to find the next superstar, CCA’s football quarterback is looking to play his name game. His focus is clear; his determination to win even more so, but most notably is his heart, which is connected to God. That strength is driving him and his team to success.

On Tuesday, May 10, 2011, Calvary Christian Academy held the annual Varsity Sports Award ceremony. Affectionately known as the VSAs, the night is about presenting awards to outstanding athletes who competed in fall, winter, and spring sports. The Academy Awards style gala began in The Grill, where athletes, parents, coaches, administrators, and teachers began the night’s celebration with a light dinner hosted by CCA’s athletics director, Dana Ridenour.

Dinner was followed by the ceremony in the Calvary Chapel Theatre, where secondary principal, Rob Lofthouse, opened in prayer. The VSAs included Athlete of the Year, Eagle Awards, Record-breaking Award, athletes with highest GPA on the team, Rick Hornsby Award, and the overall Athletic Team Award.

The athletes of the year were voted for by high school students and the winners were Ryan Reilly, a two-sport athlete, and Deborah Gordon, also a two-sport athlete. Reilly won for an outstanding soccer season and Gordon for an All-American year in basketball. Both Reilly and Gordon received a trophy and a five hundred dollar check donated by Chick-fil-A. Both gave inspirational speeches, starting out with thanking God.

The Record-Breaking Award went to Javan Shashaty, a three-sport athlete, who received the award for football. Shashaty leads the county in yards completed and has a very good chance of breaking the states record next year.

It turned out to be a great night for CCA soccer, which accounted for numerous awards, including the top prize for Best Athletic Team thanks to a 19-win season and first district championship win in CCA history. “Tonight was a great night for Eagles soccer. What we did on and off the field definitely paid off,” said Ryan Reilly.

The final presentation, the Rick Hornsby Award, went to Amanda Diaz, who was walked to the stage by her mom and who gave an inspirational speech that touched the crowd. “Amanda definitely deserved this award. She worked so hard through her disability,” said her brother, Matt Diaz.

The athletes of CCA have matured throughout this school year, seamlessly using sports for both competition and as a ministry of God’s love.

With each graduating CCA class, there’s another year marked with memorable and powerful legacies left behind by CCA senior athletes. With God’s strength and wisdom, and with their coaches’ direction, these athletes have helped defined what athletics at CCA truly is—a program that measures success, not by a line of scores, but by looking at how they [players and coaches] effectively shared the gospel after each win or loss.

Our senior athletes have also helped raise the competitiveness of the teams, handing off the baton to the next player in line—mentoring them and equipping them for the next season. At the same time,  the new and current athletes have taken off running towards the goal, expanding the athletics program to new heights. And through each step, giving all the glory to God.

Senior, Kaylee Groeneveld said, “I am so proud of the graduates this year. The volleyball team for one, had a great season and our younger players will rise up next year.”  To sum up the senior accomplishments, Coach Barry Cantrell said that his senior track athletes have “put together a tremendous example for the potential our team has in years to come.”

The “years to come” can have spectacular results in store, as each member of the next incoming classes has the ability to continue the winning nature of athletics, and make the Eagles exponentially stronger in competition. The view for all sports next year is highly optimistic, and the story will continue!

Prior to States, Coach Barry Cantrell said, “Our runners have displayed phenomenal poise so far, now we just have to finish.” The competition defined the team’s success and mission throughout the year, as they exemplified diligence and achieved their goals. The boys 4×100 relay team broke the school record in the Finals, while the girl’s 4×800 relay team finished in second, setting another new school record.

Going into the meet, Coach Cantrell expected great results but did not anticipate the exciting outcomes. The results of the state meet were excellent for CCA track standards, as the team qualified and placed the most runners in the state competition than ever before. A runner said, “This was a great year, and I’m glad we were able to achieve results for all of our work.”

“I have seen tremendous growth in both personal character and spirituality in the athletes,” further explains Cantrell. The team also used their gifts to further the Kingdom—volunteering at the Refuge and continuously praying throughout practices, meets and competitions. They supported each other in their pursuit of Christ and grew closer with one another as well as the season transgressed.

“God has truly blessed me this year, I am proud of what they accomplished in the athletic, scholastic, personal, and spiritual areas of their lives,” reflects Cantrell. The results of the competition were indeed outstanding in addition to the many other accomplishments on and off the track standard.

Founded in 1769, Dartmouth is located in Hanover, New Hampshire and is the nation’s ninth college. Being one of the few students to have attended Calvary for all ten years, Pierre has certainly built up his own resume among the teachers, coaches, and classmates he has been with for so long.

“Dominick is a person who has always worked extremely hard with everything he’s done and the gifts and abilities that he has are going to be used to the fullest extent at this institution, so we’re very excited,” said Pierre’s Football Coach, Jason Kaiser.

Although this colonial-old school may have been founded on a familiar foundation of moral Christian principles, like many secular institutions, Dartmouth has been built up to become a school plethora of diverse religious and intellectual thought. With this in mind, Pierre is determinedly mindful of his mission. “I would like to turn things around and just make a difference,” he said.

Comparing him to the prophet Daniel, CCA Football Coach, Trent Gamble, hopes and prays that Dominick will not compromise but rather “change the culture.” Although Dominick may be leaving a lasting legacy of leadership behind at CCA, friends and family haven’t a doubt that this will continue as he seeks the fulfillment of Christ’s “Great Commission” and prepares to make Dartmouth disciples of Jesus Christ in New Hampshire.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes Endurance Team is a beautiful example of how one can use athletics to spread the Gospel.  Our very own Physical Education Teacher and Coach, Mrs. Tina Reeder, has been a part of FCAE for two years.  As part of the team, the athletes train and compete in various 5 K races, marathons, and even the Ironman Triathlon.

In case you were wondering, Ironman Triathlons consist of running 26.2 miles, swimming 2.4 miles, and biking 112 miles. This is truly running with perseverance, yet as much as they work on training their physical bodies, the team members focus equally on exercising their spiritual muscles. One of the main verses on the FCA Endurance website is 1 Timothy 4: 7-8, which says:  “Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

The athletes train their spiritual bodies through prayer meetings and conferences where they learn how to share the Gospel through endurance sports. Mrs. Reeder says, “I love to do events all over the country and find teammates that share my same passion for endurance sports and for Christ.” A dozen CCA parents and teachers have joined Mrs. Reeder on the FCAE Team, and if you want to be involved in this exciting, hardcore ministry for Christ, contact her at tinar@ccaeagles.org.

On November 21, Calvary’s FCAE Team will be participating in the Fantasy of Lights 5K run in Tradewinds Park, and it is not too late to get involved!  Contact Mrs. Reeder soon to sign up for this upcoming race! “May the God who gives ENDURANCE and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Jesus Christ, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  Romans 15:5-6

These missionary cheerleaders truly cheer for Christ. As a veteran Eagle cheerleader, I realize the great opportunity we have to share the Gospel at games. As a tradition, at the end of each basketball game, we invite the opposing team’s cheerleaders to pray with us. It’s a great way to show sportsmanship and show the other schools what Calvary Christian Athletics is all about. If the opposing basketball team does not have cheerleaders, our cheerleading team prays amongst all the basketball players at the completion of the game.

Keeping our focus on Christ, rather than all the minute skills it takes to be all-star cheerleaders, has brought our team much closer in multiple ways. Cheerleading is more than just an individual competition; it is a team sport that requires trust. During practices, we must stay focused in order to perform at our best level during halftime. Yet at the same time, we joke with each other and enjoy each other’s company. Spending great amounts of time in prayer and devotion to the Lord has brought us closer as a team, and as friends. CCA cheerleaders’ goal is to truly transform the face of cheerleading around the world, and to champion its true purpose: to learn sportsmanship, encourage the players, gain close, lasting friendships, and most importantly, share the Gospel of Christ.
