There is no one alive who is youer than you.” –Dr. Seuss

When Calvary Christian Academy opened ten years ago, Mary Kavanaugh was asked to serve as the elementary librarian. She remembers sitting down in the office of administrators, telling them: “I work better as an assistant, not when I’m the one in charge. I work better being the number two.” As she left, she relayed to them that she would pray about the teaching position and get back to them. Before she even made it to the car, God whispered softly, “Mary, I AM number one, you are the number two.”

Mary knew right then and there that this was a strong calling on her life and she was to serve her Father wholeheartedly. As God continued to give her a brilliantly flaming passion for the students, Mary, humbled and privileged, took the job.

Soon after, Mary started a thrilling day at CCA called, Wacky Wednesday to commemorate the life of Dr. Seuss and his birthday!

This year, on Wednesday, March 3, students and staff came to school in mismatched, crazy, and silly clothing. Every year, the kids in elementary await this day, and as their excitement builds, you can hear their quips, which go something like this: “I love Wacky Wednesday!”

“It’s so much fun to dress up all silly!” says an eager fifth grader and Mrs. Kavanaugh, dressed in her own wacky outfit, would be the first to agree. Nearly 100% of the staff and students participated in the fun by dressing up, and everything was game: from Pre-K through fifth grade, it was “truer than true”—this was a wacky bunch, the wackiest we had ever seen. Mismatched clothing, crazy hairstyles, clothes on backwards, and silly hats… off the wall designs taken straight from Dr. Seuss’ wacky world!

Behind all the spoof and funfare there was a simple message: it is okay to be yourself, no matter what people say. God made YOU special and unique! Now, that’s magnifique!

Almost everyone can remember their first year of school as a kindergartener. It is a time that marks the beginning of a 5 year old’s passage into the academic world where he is given a foundation for the next twelve years of his education. Though often overlooked, kindergarten is in fact one of the most crucial times in a student’s life, for it is then that one begins to dream and aspire towards the plans God has given him. Many kindergarteners are already beginning to do just this as they work diligently in every task they’re given, while reaping the benefits of their labor.

Several miniature Picassos and Da Vincis have used their God-given artistic gifts and talents to create beautiful masterpieces. Kindergarteners, Natalia Acousta, Taylor Bates, Annabelle Curran, Eli King, Christina McDuffie, Sarah Claire Salsamendi, Steven Susanj, Mya Verleur, Olivia Wiebe, and Reagann Zufelt are CCA’s current featured artists in the kindergarten hallway. Their artwork portrays creative harvest scenes through the use of several different resources, including cotton balls. Though only 5 years old, these aspiring artists can look forward to continuing the development of their artistic abilities throughout the rest of their CCA education. When asked about her accomplishment, kindergartener Taylor Bates, replied, “I just really liked it, I wasn’t thinking that it would really happen!”

Bates’ teacher, Mrs. Fussner, recognizes the importance of laying a firm foundation at an early age—academically and spiritually. Fussner believes that every lesson taught and concept learned will be used to directly further the Kingdom, even at the age of 5. “It’s easier for them to form these good habits now than when they’re older. The Lord is in our science, our reading, and everything we learn, for in Him all things consist. You could ask anyone in the class now and they would tell you that they’re learning to read so that they can learn to read the Bible,” explains Fussner. A kindergarten teacher at CCA since the school’s beginning ten years ago, Fussner seeks and continues the mission of Calvary Christian Academy in making disciples of Jesus Christ.

Because of this same vision shared by all of the kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Fussner, Mrs. Clarke, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Stresau, and Ms. Allen, Calvary Christian Academy has been able to raise up disciples of Jesus Christ from the morning of a kindergartener’s first day of school, to the night of a senior’s graduation. May the Lord continue to equip His little ones for the prosperous plans He has for them, wherever they might lead.
