COMMENTARY: Calm in the Storm

The disciples went to him and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

Sooner or later, the winds of life’s storms blow, and even though we’re in the same boat as Jesus, our faith is tested. In Matthew 8 the disciples found themselves in a furious storm. It came up without warning, and they were at sea to boot! And yet, how do we find our Savior? Sleeping!

Somebody told me years ago that one cannot begin to prepare for an opportunity when it presents itself. Rather, one must have been busy preparing so that one would possess the capacity to embrace opportunity when she came knocking. I think the same goes for life’s storms.

Spiritually speaking, we ought not wait until the winds start blowing to prepare ourselves to withstand them. Spiritual preparation for life’s storms means being connected to Jesus. Connection to Jesus comes from intimate relationship with Him. And intimate relationship with Him – as with anybody – comes from spending time together in two-way communication.

Jesus’ calm in and over the storm arose out of his spiritual preparation to withstand the winds to such an extent that, despite the storm’s without-warning fury, He was able to sleep in its midst.

How about you? Got peace? Fortify your relationship with Lord! If you’re in the center of a storm, turn to God who, with a few words, can calm the furor within and around you.

He will not let you stumble and fall; the one who watches over you will not sleep. Psalm 121:3
