The CCA Eagles Varsity Volleyball team came into last Saturday’s game against North Broward Prep with their heads up. The team was coming off of a dramatic victory on Thursday night against Pine Crest; as they improved their record to 7-2 with a 3 to 2 win. The Eagles looked back to their prior meetings with long time foe, North Broward Prep. Earlier in the season they played a back-to- back match against the school, but they lost the first game, giving them their first loss of the year. Now the Eagles stormed into Saturday’s game looking to continue the winning streak, beat their rival NBP, and give Head Coach Dan Weppner, a happy birthday, as he was celebrating his 50th.
Before the game, Coach Weppner referred back to last match up against NBP. He stated that the team “grew up that game.” The Eagles led by Senior Kaylee Groeneveld, overcame a deficit and eventually won the game. Now they looked to do the same thing at home, but first a birthday arrangement was in order. The whole team gathered together and sung a birthday song for Coach Weppner prior to the game, and afterwards they brought him a birthday cake along with a win.
During the game, Daylyn Weppner, daughter of the head coach, had 14 points; five aces, five kills, a block and nine digs, and Jessie Wilkie had 36 assists. Deborah Gordon and Kaylee Groeneveld, together had 25 kills, five blocks, 12 points and seven aces. Christine Lakatos had six kills, two blocks and a tip, and Jennie Wilkie had 11 points and three aces. The whole team contributed in the win, as everybody played superb, which led to yet another victory over NBP.
Coach Dan Weppner received the best birthday gift he could ask for; a well fought and earned victory from his Varsity Girl’s Volleyball squad.
