With the 2010 Winter Olympics completed and its awarded participants now home, the excitement of competition could seem to have come to a close—but for a select group of CCA third through eighth graders, the games of arithmetic have only begun.
These bold, young mathematicians are pumped after returning with 19 ribbons from the ACSI Math Olympics that took place at Coral Springs Christian Academy on February 25.
The youngest of the team to score an accuracy rate of 100 percent is third grader Sam Orozco-Torres. He comments, “Before the Math Olympics, I went through a lot of strict training with my mom every day.”
Students were not the only ones to receive recognition for their efforts. Upon being asked as to why they enjoy math, fifth grader, James Hansen instantly replied, “Because we have a great teacher!” Math Olympic Coordinator and fifth grade teacher, Leatrice Martin, teamed up with other teachers and parents to faithfully coach the students.
Returning to the Math Olympics this year was fifth grader Kyle Ellis, who earned a perfect score. “Practice makes perfect!” He said.
