When Calvary Christian Academy opened ten years ago, Mary Kavanaugh was asked to serve as the elementary librarian. She remembers sitting down in the office of administrators, telling them: “I work better as an assistant, not when I’m the one in charge. I work better being the number two.” As she left, she relayed to them that she would pray about the teaching position and get back to them. Before she even made it to the car, God whispered softly, “Mary, I AM number one, you are the number two.”

Mary knew right then and there that this was a strong calling on her life and she was to serve her Father wholeheartedly. As God continued to give her a brilliantly flaming passion for the students, Mary, humbled and privileged, took the job.

Soon after, Mary started a thrilling day at CCA called, Wacky Wednesday to commemorate the life of Dr. Seuss and his birthday!

This year, on Wednesday, March 3, students and staff came to school in mismatched, crazy, and silly clothing. Every year, the kids in elementary await this day, and as their excitement builds, you can hear their quips, which go something like this: “I love Wacky Wednesday!”

“It’s so much fun to dress up all silly!” says an eager fifth grader and Mrs. Kavanaugh, dressed in her own wacky outfit, would be the first to agree. Nearly 100% of the staff and students participated in the fun by dressing up, and everything was game: from Pre-K through fifth grade, it was “truer than true”—this was a wacky bunch, the wackiest we had ever seen. Mismatched clothing, crazy hairstyles, clothes on backwards, and silly hats… off the wall designs taken straight from Dr. Seuss’ wacky world!

Behind all the spoof and funfare there was a simple message: it is okay to be yourself, no matter what people say. God made YOU special and unique! Now, that’s magnifique!
