Warriors for Christ

The crowd cheered passionately as the football players came into view. With their fists pumping high in the air, the Warrior football players ran through the banner the cheerleaders held, then gathered together in the middle of the field to pray. The students at Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School (LFOHS) in Georgia are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in. Even when the circumstances are difficult and their freedom seems to be threatened they say, “You cannot silence us.”
Less than two weeks ago, the students at LFOHS were banned from writing Bible verses on their football banners. Signs that read, “Commit yourselves to the Lord and your plans will succeed,” were considered “unconstitutional” by the Superintendent of county schools because it was a public display of religion by the school. However, the LFO Warriors were not easily fazed.
The community has come alongside the students, participating in rallies and petitioning the School Board to reevaluate their decision. So far, the students have been allowed to display their banners outside the field, but the football players are no longer allowed to run through them like they used to.
While facing challenging circumstances and growing opposition, these students at a public high school have risen up to proclaim their faith boldly, for the whole world to hear. Shelby Rouse, a junior at LFOHS says, “This has really turned into standing up for what we believe in. Our goal was met and it has brought glory to God. Multiple people I know have gotten saved over this and that is really all we are trying to do.”
While reading about their faith and courage to stand up, I was convicted about our own spiritual state. Freedom is often not appreciated until it is taken away. It isn’t until our wings are broken that we remember what it is like to fly. Time and carelessness has slowly begun to kill our passion and quench our fire. And what started out as a hunger and thirst for Christ has now become a complacency and apathy towards the Kingdom. We are fed daily in Bible class, chapels, and small groups, but so few times do we actually realize that our faith is real— that there is a spiritual battle going on all around us, and we cannot sleep any longer.
In a time when our world is so desperately searching for the truth, we need to rise up and grab hold of the freedom that is right in front of us. What good is it to be alive, if we are truly dead inside? Revelation 3:2 says, “Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.”
The LFOHS Warriors are indeed warriors. These football players, cheerleaders, and students have decided to stand up for Christ, no matter the cost. Likewise, as Christian brothers and sisters, we need to wake up and follow the calling to be as bold as warriors on the spiritual battlefield for our Lord.

Patrick,
Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement. Although we would like to take all the credit for breaking this piece of news, actually this story was reported previously in the New York Times. We read about it and Rebecca Urrutia, one of my student reporters did an extraordinary job in following and reporting the news to our school community. She found one of the girls who was quoted in the original article on Facebook and sent her a message. Surprisingly, the girl replied and gave Rebecca some great notes. As you can see, in unity there is strength. So, thank you again.
Keep coming back to The Messenger. Our stories are informative and insightful, but most of all, they are filled with God’s message and we hope the world will read all about it. Pass it on!
God bless,
