With all the hype and excitement of fall sports, CCA will transition to a new era of winter sports in just a few short weeks. Prior to the start of the 2009 season, Athletic Director, Dana Ridenour mentioned his high hopes for athletics at CCA. He said, “All of our [fall] teams will be competitive.” His hopes for winter sports are equal, if not greater than fall sports. Winter sports are comprised of basketball, soccer, and wrestling—boys and girls, and at all levels. Conditioning is just beginning for most of these sports, as athletes are intensely training to excel and get to the top.
Head Coach of the Varsity Girls Basketball team, Sean Dougherty said, “Off-season training is one of the most important credentials for success.” However, not only did Dougherty and his team train vigorously, they also participated in many outreaches. The focal point of these outreaches was centered on public schools. They viewed this ministry as an opportunity to reach out to the community and excel off the court too.
Not only has this brought God’s love to the community, but “it has strengthened our team too,” Dougherty adds. The team has grown together as one through the experiences of these outreaches. They have learned that it is necessary to help the community in need, rather than place all of the emphasis on conditioning and practicing. As we well know, it is vital to practice and work hard, but it is also equally important to take some time off and reach out to others for Christ—the equation for achieving a perfect balance for success.
